I’ve spent more than 25 years helping advocacy organizations and political campaigns use communications and digital tools to build movements, mobilize supporters, and influence public policy.

My digital advocacy experience includes email campaigns, petitions, social media, SMS, websites, digital fundraising, content strategy, audience segmentation, and online organizing.

Digital Advocacy Experience

At Defenders of Wildlife, I helped develop national advocacy campaigns that generated millions of constituent actions and contributed to millions of dollars in online fundraising.

As Obama’s New Mexico State Digital Director in 2012, I led statewide digital communications and online engagement, increasing Facebook audience by 308%, Twitter following by 128%, and SMS subscribers by 146%.

As Women Thrive Worldwide’s Vice President of Communications and Outreach, I help draw international attention to Boko Haram’s kidnapping of schoolgirls in Nigeria, the International Violence Against Women Act, and other gender equality issues.

At Care2, I directed digital advocacy and lead-generation campaigns for nonprofit organizations and socially responsible brands. Relevant lead generation increased 18% year over year, while petition production increased 150%.

The Goal Isn’t Engagement

Engagement is useful. Action is better. A successful advocacy campaign moves people through a journey: Awareness → Interest → Engagement → Action → Relationship.

The long-term goal is not simply to collect another email address or signature. It’s to build a community of people who believe in the mission and are willing to participate.
